Visionary seminar ‘Digitalisation in life sciences: Growing the future’

The hybrid seminar will have a focus on the potential and possibilities within the subject “Digitalisation in Life Sciences” – initiating digital transformation and change management in the health sector, trying to foresee the next 5-10 years of development in the field. 

The visionary seminar is divided into two sessions, first presents different healthcare sector innovations, proven to be successful from Estonia and the second part consists of innovative presentations from the future of Healthcare.

Crash Course on Internationalisation

The path to foreign markets can need research. There are many aspects to be considered – f.e. cultural, legal and economic – and taking the first step may seem difficult. In addition, after making the first contact, staying and being present in the new market requires a strong commitment. To make this process more clear we will share concrete experience stories of different strategies on entering foreign markets and talk about potential target markets in digitalisation of healthcare. Experience stories of enterprises entered to Estonian, Indian and Australian markets follow the presentations about the newly completed report on joint marketing opportunities in Digitalisation of Healthcare in Estonia, India and Australia.

Speakers of the visionary seminar

Ain Aaviksoo, MD MPH is the Chief Medical Officer of Guardtime Health. 
Prior to this he worked as Undersecretary for E-services and Innovation for the Estonian government overseeing the digital transformation and innovation of healthcare, labour and social matters. 
Dr Aaviksoo obtained MD from University of Tartu and MPH from Harvard University. 
He has earlier work experience as a physician, senior level civil servant, international level consultant on large system transformation and technology adoption in healthcare, health policy researcher, CEO of public policy think-tank Praxis and as a health-tech entrepreneur. 

Dr Aaviksoo has published over 20 peer-reviewed articles and contributed to several book chapters on health policy and e-health, he also regularly presents as invited keynote speaker on digital services and healthcare.

Tõnu Esko, PhD, is a Vice Director of Development and head of Estonian Biobank Innovation Center at Institute of Genomics, University of Tartu, where he holds Professor Human Genomics position genomics. Dr Esko is also a Research Scientist at the Broad Institute of Harvard and MIT, Cambridge, USA and visiting researcher at the Children’s Hospital Boston and Harvard Medical School, Boston, USA. He has founded and is co-leading several international consortia. He serves as Scientific Advisory Board member for several global companies.
The Estonian Biobank hosts a comprehensive data repository of 200,000 participants from Estonia. Over the past 13 years, Dr Esko has been coordinating Biobank R&D activities both in native Estonia and internationally, both in the academic and private sector. He has also been a crucial member of the Biobank’s strategic leadership team in areas of fundraising, investment decision making on IT, technology and data infrastructure, and building partnerships with leading academic and industry players. His team is contributing to the Estonian Precision Medicine Initiative related activities by developing computational algorithms and feedback reports for personalized medicine applications.
Currently his work at Estonian Biobank Innovation Center is focused on building public private partnerships both with early-stage startups, SMEs, global corporations and VC funds across the fields of HealthTech, BioTech and MedTech by utilizing the rich Estonian Biobank digital health repositories as well as world-class scientific expertise. His latest endeavor is to set up a holding company for University of Tartu, an entity to park IP and data access based equity from startups, accelerators and even VC fonds.

Bart de Witte, is one of Europe’s leading and awarded experts on the digital transformation of healthcare, and one of the most progressive forward thinkers focuses on finding alternative European strategies for the current postmodern world to create a more desirable future with greater social benefits. He is the initiator of the HIPPO AI Foundation in Berlin, which aims to establish the first global NGO for open source-based artificial intelligence in medicine. He is involved as a mentor for dozen digital health start-ups and lectures at various universities in Germany, Belgium, Switzerland, Austria and China. He co-founded the Digital Health Academy where he shares his knowledge to improve digital literacy.

 

 

 

Liesbet Geris is Collen-Francqui Research Professor in Biomechanics and Computational Tissue Engineering at the University of Liège and Leuven in Belgium.  Her research focusses on the multi-scale and multi-physics modelling of biological processes. Together with her team and their clinical and industrial collaborators, she uses these models to investigate the etiology of non-healing fractures, to design in silico potential cell-based treatment strategies and to optimize manufacturing processes of these tissue engineering constructs. Liesbet is scientific coordinator of the Prometheus platform for Skeletal Tissue Engineering (50+ researchers). She has edited several books on computational modelling and tissue engineering. She has received 2 prestigious ERC grants (starting in 2011 and consolidator in 2017) to finance her research and has received a number of young investigator and research awards from the in silico and regenerative medicine communities. She is a former member and chair of the Young Academy of Belgium (Flanders) and member of the strategic alliance committee of the Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine Society. She is the current executive director of the Virtual Physiological Human Institute and in that capacity she advocates the use of in silico modeling in healthcare through liaising with the clinical community, the European Commission and Parliament, regulatory agencies (EMA, FDA) and various other stakeholders. Besides her research work, she is often invited to give public lectures on the challenges of interdisciplinary in research, women in academia and digital healthcare.

Sachin Gaur, Director Operations, InnovatioCuris, is a researcher cum entrepreneur in space of mobile and Internet solutions. He was in top 10 innovators in India under India Innovates Growth Programme 2013 by FICCI. He is involved in multiple ventures in the domain of digital marketing, mobile solutions and the Internet of Things.

He has a double M.Sc.(tech) in Mobile Security and Cryptography from Aalto University, Finland and University of Tartu, Estonia. He has worked in past with organizations like Adobe, C.E.R.N. and in research at the Aalto University in security-related topics.

Also, he has a dozen patents issued/pending in USPTO apart from contributing book chapters in two books on topics of Innovation and Healthcare.

Speakers of the International Matchmaking

Anna Werner supports Medical Valley in the role of Project Manager in charge of strategic and operational development of initiatives fast-tracking innovation adoption in healthcare. The Medical Valley European Metropolitan Region Nuremberg (EMN) Association is an internationally leading innovation ecosystem in healthcare management and  a partner of EIT Health,  supported by EIT, a body of the European Union. Medical Valley and EIT Health jointly run the Bridgehead programme, which supports European start-ups and scale-ups to penetrate international markets. Anna’s leadership role in Bridgehead consists of guiding the members of EIT Health’s vetted European network of top-notch accelerators, who open the right doors to establish and grow cross-border business.

Prior to joining Medical Valley EMN, Anna worked for different start-ups specialised in sensor technology and software development. Besides programme management, her technical expertise rely on software development in medical imaging and robotics in the field of care and further logistics. Currently, Anna co-manages the Bridgehead programme and other accelerator initiatives, thereby supporting selected companies to advance their business and enter new markets.

Dr Neil Thomas has been a founding team member of ZipPrime and a partner in Ventac Partners since 2012. He has worked in the protection and commercial exploitation of academic and industrial intellectual property in the biotechnology sector since 1997, within both legal and business environments. Neil has extensive experience in company formation, patent drafting, patent portfolio management, business development, licensing and technology exploitation.

He is currently CBO of Idogen AB, Lund, Sweden and CBO of the Cube Labs group of companies, Milan, Italy. Neil has been advising the University of Tartu, Estonia in technology transfer and related matters since 2012.

Neil holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Biological Sciences from the University of Birmingham, UK and a PhD in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology from the University of Durham, UK.

Sven Parkel, PhD is the General Manager of Tartu Biotechnology Park (TBP). He’s work in TBP supports local businesses and startups in biotechnology and cosmetics offering office and lab-space, opportunities through project funding through EU and business development in an incubation program. Sven is also the Secretary General of the ScanBalt network which builds and supports healthtech ecosystem in the Baltic Sea Region. Prior to that, Sven worked in the largest university of Estonia, Tartu University, as a Tech Transfer Officer and Head of the IP Unit commercializing university’s intellectual property. In addition, Sven was a member of board in the Connected Health Estonia cluster, which contains all major hospitals and universities in Estonia and most Estonian health-tech SMEs and startups and where he helped to steer the cluster activities based on the needs of Estonian R&D institutions. Sven worked with the Estonian Development Fund to develop the Estonian Smart Specialization strategy in health technologies through mapping the ecosystem and designing measures of support. He is an active member of Estonian startup community where he helps to build up and improve the conditions needed for healthtech startups to thrive.

Pavan Asalapuram, is a pharmacist by education and trained biotechnologist, with a desire to develop novel molecular diagnostic methods. After formal graduate education from India, Pavan moved to Sweden and worked as a researcher in top universities/research organisations like the Royal Institute of Technology-KTH, Stockholm University, Karolinska University and SciLifeLab (Swedish national hub for molecular biosciences).

From his graduation, Pavan is involved in several European Union research projects, where he has experienced the horizons of health care systems between industrialized and developing countries. Pavan has played a major role in developing diagnostic platforms, published about 20 scientific articles, and holds 2 international patents in biomedicine. Pavan has developed successful collaborations with researchers, clinicians, policy makers, and WHO national reference laboratories in the Americas, Asia (mainly India), and Europe.

Having gained experience in biomedical diagnostics and mental-health care, Pavan has established three companies in Sweden (EMPE Diagnostics AB, ApiRays AB, Flair Kids AB) and in India, he has established EMPE Diagnostic’s Indian subsidiary, and co-founded Xact Diagnotek Pvt. Ltd., and EMPE Diagnostics India, developing cost-effective and reliable biomedical and biotechnology solutions.

 

Sriganesh Rao is an ICT professional with 37 years of global industry experience in leading complex technology projects. His experience spans across leading IT organizations–TCS & IBM (India & Australia), Alopa Networks (US & India), Telco’s– OPTUS (Australia) and TTSL, OEMs—ERG Telecommunications (Australia), Bharat Electronics and United Telecoms. Currently, he is the MD & CEO of Calligo Technologies at Bangalore-India, a company focused on AI and Big Data Analytics, addressing Healthcare, Enterprise, and Smart City Solutions.

Sriganesh has MTech in Electronics from India and MBA (Technology Management) from Deakin University, Australia. He is currently pursuing PhD in 5G technologies at Aarhus University, Denmark.
