BioHackathon – sTARTUp Day 2022

This August the BioHackathon will be welcoming everybody passionate about innovating the fields of medicine, agrifood and life sciences. This hackathon will focus on business development, execution of ideas and improving the idea pitches.
 

This August the BioHackathon will once again bring together students, startups and innovators in the field of life sciences focusing on business development, execution of ideas and improving idea pitches. Prizes for the best ideas both in the Food and Health category and for the best pitch are given out!

All participants will take part in a pitching competition and sessions with mentors as well as learn from topical seminars, held by experienced professionals.
All innovators in the field of life sciences are welcome – students and startups, individuals and teams, both with or without an idea!

Facilitators

Alina Paas (MENTOR) is the Intellectual Property Analyst at University of Tartu, Centre for Entrepreneurship and Innovation. She has a Master’s degree in Intellectual Property as well in the IT law. Alina is an expert on Intellectual property commercialization and protection and can explain to teams how to take IP into account in business model at early stage.

 


Andre Veskioja (MENTOR/KEYNOTE SPEAKER/JURY MEMBER) has more than 15 years of experience in the food and agriculture sector. For over a decade, he worked as a product developer focusing on healthy food products (dairy, meat, water, cereals, etc.). Last three years, Andre has been the director of the Estonian Crop Research Institute, which channels knowledge of agriculture’s future directions, works closely with consumers, and actively takes part in agricultural policies.

 


Dr. Ann Leen Mahhov (MENTOR/MODERATOR) is a CEO & Co-Founder of TheraSync, a platform that uses technology to optimize the work of mental health care providers, and to empower patients to take an active role in their healing journey. Her medical training and experience as a caregiver, assistant nurse and general practitioner gives Ann Leen a good perspective on clinicians’ current unmet needs. While mastering Digital Health at Tallinn University of Technology, she aims to build a strong bridge between technology and medicine to create a better future for both medics and patients.


Kertu Tombak (JURY MEMBER) is the development manager of the startup & IT sector at the City Government of Tartu. Her previous experience is in marketing & communications in corporate, private sector & startups. She is passionate about the nature and is rooting for all innovative solutions protecting our living environment. 

 

 


 Paweł Ciach (MENTOR) is a Startup Manager in EIT Food Warsaw office. He has a Master`s degree in Law and has 5 years of experience in working with startups in an investment fund and corporate accelerator and 4+ years of experience in financial departments in consulting. Pawel is expert in building innovative startups, in funding acquisition for companies and in companies due diligence.

 


Rainis Venta (MENTOR/KEYNOTE SPEAKER/JURY MEMBER) is a biochemist with a doctorate degree from the University of Tartu. He has worked in academia both in Estonia and abroad as a fundamental researcher, co-authoring discoveries published in the top-ranking academic journals. In parallel, he is founder of two research-intensive start-ups and led proof-of-principle and feasibility studies on these research-intensive principles. He has recently made significant progress as a technology transfer officer at Tallinn University of Technology. 

 


Sven Parkel (SPEAKER/JURY MEMBER) is the General Secretary of the ScanBalt network, which builds and supports the health tech ecosystem in the Baltic Sea Region. He also is the General Manager of the Tartu Biotechnology Park (TBP). His work in TBP supports local businesses and startups in health tech, biotechnology and other areas offering office and lab space, opportunities through project funding through EU and business development in an incubation program.

 


Vaido Mikheim (PITCHING & DESIGN THINKING TRAINER) – As a lifelong sci-fi fan Vaido trusts that the combination of humans, science, and tech is the path to sustainable prosperity. For the last decade Vaido lives and breathes the startup scene in Estonia. He’s eager to talk about transition from science to business, and how to enable it. Today he pioneers Estonian deep tech startup ecosystem onwards as Deep Tech Project Lead at Startup Estonia. 

 


Viljam Viljasoo (MENTOR/JURY MEMBER) studied nature resources in University of Life Science and graduated in communication management from the University of Tartu. He has worked in the field of marketing & communications, has done salesman work, organized different profit and non-profit projects. Now he is learning and helping others mainly through business advisory services at Tartu Ärinõuandla (Tartu Business Advisory Services). Viljam is member of Junior Chamber International Estonia (JCI Estonia), since 2011.
